Project: Knapp Creek Trail System Kiosk Project
Location: Idaho

Description: On August 8, 2026, Tread Lightly! partners came together to support the Knapp Creek Trail System in the Salmon-Challis National Forest by installing a new trail information kiosk and signage designed to improve user education, navigation, and sustainable trail use.

The Knapp Creek area provides important backcountry access and includes an extensive network of motorized trails. With increased recreational use, providing clear, current information is essential to helping visitors understand where and how to travel responsibly while minimizing impacts to natural resources and wildlife habitat.

The new kiosk fills an important information gap in an area that previously did not have a dedicated trail information kiosk. It will provide trail users with up-to-date maps, responsible recreation information, and Tread Lightly! principles to encourage sustainable use of the trail system. By placing this information directly at the access point, users can make informed decisions before heading into the backcountry and better understand how their riding practices can help protect public lands.

The project also supports a newly constructed motorized bridge designed to divert trail traffic over waterways that provide critical habitat for endangered species. By directing motorized recreation across a designated crossing, the project helps reduce potential impacts to sensitive aquatic habitat while maintaining recreational access and connectivity throughout the trail system.

Together, the kiosk, signage, and bridge represent a proactive approach to sustainable motorized recreation. The project combines education, improved trail infrastructure, and resource protection to help ensure the Knapp Creek Trail System remains accessible and enjoyable for future generations.

This effort demonstrates the value of collaboration between public land managers, recreation organizations, mapping partners, and local motorized recreation communities. By working together, partners are helping create a trail system where responsible recreation and resource protection can go hand in hand.
